Ultra Compact is a new style of engineered stone and is becoming extremely popular because of its incredible qualities. Although each brand is manufactured slightly differently, the overall qualities of this type of material are somewhat similar.
The high-tech manufacturing process used to create ultra compact material represents an accelerated version of the metamorphic change that natural stone undergoes. Using extreme heat and pressure, a mixture of raw materials such as quartz, glass and porcelain are compressed. These surfaces contain no binders or resin and are an almost indestructible material, once installed.
Ultra-compact surfaces are:
– extremely scratch resistant (matte finishes can only be scratched by diamond).
– have a high resistance to fire and heat (allowing hotplates to be placed directly on the surface).
– stain and chemical proof and also resistant to abrasions.
– resistant to UV rays (allowing colour stability outdoors).
– resistant to ice and thawing.
The nonporous surface of this type of material consequently allows for a user friendly application. Most importantly, it is easy to clean and maintain. Because of this, it makes it the perfect option for high traffic kitchens and wet rooms, alfresco BBQ’s, fireplace cladding and more.
This type of material is often used as a large format tile as it is available in a variety of thicknesses, including a 4mm option. It is perfect for cladding and also just your standard benchtop for its incredible qualities. Available in a multitude of colour formations and patterns, many imitating various natural stones and surfaces, the possibilities are endless.
